Team store fundraising for Whittier booster clubs. A high school district and five separate elementary districts, and why that matters.

Whittier has the school structure that causes the most confusion of anywhere we publish a page for. The high schools belong to Whittier Union High School District. The elementary schools do not belong to it at all — five separate elementary districts feed into it, each with its own board, its own superintendent and its own policies.

For a booster club this is not trivia. A club raising money for a middle school program and a club raising money for a high school program in the same neighborhood are dealing with two entirely different organizations, and permission from one says nothing about the other. Clubs routinely get an approval, assume it covers the family of schools, and find out otherwise after artwork exists.

The practical advice is to establish which district actually governs your school before anything else happens, and to get the logo permission in writing from that district specifically. It is a five-minute question that prevents the most expensive mistake available here.

Districts serving Whittier

Any use of a school name, logo or mascot is the district’s to license, so the first step is knowing which office owns the mark you want to print.

  • Whittier Union High School District. Runs the comprehensive high schools only. It does not operate the elementary or middle schools that feed it.
  • Whittier City School District. One of five separate elementary districts feeding the high school district, each governing its own schools and marks.
  • East Whittier City School District. A separate elementary district with its own board and policies, feeding the same high schools.

Why are there so many districts in Whittier?
The high schools sit in a union high school district, which by design runs only the high schools. Five independent elementary districts feed it. It is a common California arrangement and it means there is no single office that speaks for every school in the city.
We have permission from the high school district. Does it cover our middle school?
No. The elementary districts are separate legal entities with their own marks and their own policies. Permission has to come from whichever district actually operates your school.
Is Santa Fe High School a Whittier school?
It is part of Whittier Union High School District but sits in Santa Fe Springs. District boundaries and city boundaries are not the same thing here, which is worth confirming before a store is described as being for a particular city.
